The land I belong to treats men and women with equality (well, almost), we don't believe in dowry,  female infanticide is never heard of and cooking is not restricted to ladies only, infact most pahadi men enjoy spending time in the kitchen and they are pretty good at it! Wondering why am I talking about all this? It's because even though Uttrakhand falls in the northern region of this country where karwa chauth is celebrated with alot of pomp and grandeur, its not a part of pahadi tradition. Pahadi's dont observe karwa Chauth so you can call it peer pressure or merely my excitement about the whole festivities around it . I have been observing this fast for a while now (yes, even before I got married). There have been so many talks around the festival promoting sexist and regressive idologies but even though I call myself a feminist I have no qualms in admitting that I absolutely love the idea of applying mehendi,  buying new clothes, going without food and water for a few...

Weaves Of Wonder

There is a certain charm about sarees which never fails to excite me, I believe a saree can make anybody a head turner irrespective of their, age, shape, size and color, its a wardrobe essential for every Indian woman.  My love for sarees started at a very young age, I would see my mom draping her exquisite banarasi silks and get lost in its elegance and beauty. Each time I was alone at home, I would sneak into my moms room and help my self with one of her sarees and drape it just like how she used to do it and fail miserably, yet I would stand in front of the mirror, put a bindi on my forehead, color my lips and feel like a princess! Saree is the synonym of our rich heritage with references to it dating back to Indus Valley Civilisation, making it the oldest piece of garment existing today! Doesn't this realisation itself makes you wanna wrap yourself in this 9 yard of  art. With its magical ability to keep you cool in summers...

Winter noon done right

Happy New Year! Well, every year we make new year resolutions like, to get more active, to travel more, to quit certain bad habits etc, so apart from getting fitter my new year resolution for 2018 involves visiting places which have always been on my mind... One such place was ' Agrasen ki Baoli' . To be honest, I loved the pictures my friends had been posting of this beautiful place and I too wanted to do the same. So when my better half (I am the bitter one!) paid me a surprise visit I decided to make the most of it and along with 2 friends we reached this heritage site. And oh boy, we were not disappointed, though a little overcrowded, this place was enchanting! For this winter outing, I decided to wear a long bohemian skirt with a thigh-high slit by ' The Khadi Cult ' I'm a fan of their quirky prints and you guys already know of my love for Indian hand-loom fabrics! I paired this gorgeous skirt with a thick black cotton shirt, the bes...

Ikkat love and a lacy affair put together

Image
The word Ikkat, Ikhat or Ikat originates from the Malay-Indonesian word 'Mengikat', which means to tie a bundle of yarn. So what seems like a print here is actually a complex weaving style using specially dyed thread to develop a pattern. Ikkat was brought to India long ago, owing to the trade ties in the ancient times with China and Indonesia, and became a prominent handloom art in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Gujrat with each place developing their own style of weaving patterns.      So owing to my love for handloom cotton  I picked up some fabric a couple of months back, gave them to a local tailor with some hand drawn designs and asked her to stitch them up for me and voila she turned them into some really nice exclusive outfits, one of them is what I am wearing here. Its a black Ikkat crop top with matching high-waist Palazzo (gosh they are the most comfortable pants ever!) teamed with a lace shrug to give it a modern twist, mo...
